Despite the weather with its strong winds and rain, now is the time to get working on improvements at The Garway for the 2026 season. All it takes is a few small touches to make a big difference to the customer experience, and also just to refresh some areas so returning customers have something to make a difference from their previous stay. The dining room has seen a few changes over the past weeks with an extra table added and new crockery purchased. Previously guests had been using the lovely Midwinter set which dates back to the 1950s and had been something I had been collecting over many years. It stems back to my childhood when my mother had this in use at home and it was our daily meal time crockery through the late 60s.Over the years I have managed to pick up cups, saucers, plates and tableware from charity shops and online sites so we could have a bit of a unique retro look in the dining room. Unfortunately daily use, and the rigours of the dishwasher have taken their toll and so they have now been taken out of use. The replacements are a classic white design which I hope guests will enjoy. Also sorting through cupboards recently I have come across a number of hand embroidered tablecloths made by a great aunt of mine inherited after she passed away a number of years ago. They were always looking a bit faded but thanks to the science of stain removers and new detergents they have washed up really well and the original colours look very vibrant - now they will be pressed into daily use to add some lovely colours to the breakfast experience.
Having some time without bookings over January has allowed a bit of indulgence to tour some of the local antique and charity shops. It has been great to be able to find a few little items and ornaments to go in rooms and help develop the 'Boutique' feel with some touches of individuality. Also the artificial flowers and plants in the rooms are being phased out: providing a few fresh flowers in each room for guests is a small effort but coupled withthe home-made cakes and scones adds to the little touches that guests regularly praise in reviews. Hopefully visitors will appreciate these little touches, it is all aimed at making the stays as special as possible, and developing the wow factor.
